Nursing for the all the hygienists at the Old Surgery Dental Surgery is the highlight of my job role.
All three hygienists have their own routine thus no two days are the same when in the hygiene surgeries. I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoy my job as a dental nurse. Patient care is the priority throughout the practice and I enjoy being part of it.
Start of the day
The first task as a hygiene nurse is setting up the surgery for the day ahead, I ensure I have completed a daily list of cleaning and setting up jobs every morning. Each hygienist has a different tray set up of their preferred instruments and scalers and other dental products such as polish, disclosing solution and single use toothbrushes for oral health demonstrations.
Throughout the day treating patients
After setting up for the day I collect the first patient to the waiting room, I always ask patients how they are as we are walking to surgery to make them feel comfortable. When in surgery I put on my PPE and give the patient safety glasses to to put on, I also provide the patient with a mouthwash rinse. The hygienist will then talk the patient through the appointment and assess their oral health. While she is doing this, I will type up clinical notes for the hygienist to edit or add to at the end of the appointment.
Throughout most of the treatment all of the hygienists will use an ultrasonic scaler, (unless the patient requests otherwise) and this is where I come in with the aspiration. I have learnt a lot through dental nursing, especially that each person’s tolerance range is different and I am always conscious of where abouts in the mouth I place the aspirator tip and try to be make treatment as comfortable as possible for all patients.
Towards the end of the appointment the hygienist with demonstrate tooth brush and interdental techniques and products to the patient. Once the patient has left the surgery, I give everywhere a clean down and escort the contaminated instruments to the decontamination room. The decontamination nurse will clean and sterilise these ready for use again.
End of the day
After our last patient of the day I give the surgery a thorough clean, we work as a team at the old surgery and there is always at least once person available to help shut the surgery down.
