Many adults, with healthy teeth and gums, are now becoming aware that their front six teeth are becoming worn and flattened, usually from mid thirties onwards. This is often due, initially to wearing of the canine teeth which then stop protecting the four front incisor teeth, allowing them to wear also.
If diagnosed early, treatment can be limited to simply replacing the worn tips of the canine teeth by bonding white filling material straight onto the tooth. This is simple and requires no tooth preparation. The build ups will last several years before wearing down again, at which point they can easily be replaced.
If the upper incisor teeth have already worn at the tips, these can be rebuilt by bonding on white filling material or by placing ultra thin porcelain veneers, often with no tooth preparation at all.
If diagnosed, or untreated at an early stage, tooth wear can progress to become a much more significant problem.
The causes of severe tooth wear are usually the result of more factors than just worn canine teeth.
Cases like these are reasonably straight forward to treat once diagnosis of the cause of the tooth wear has been established. Treatment progresses along a standard protocol, with occasional individual variations.
Stage one:Full clinical photographs and possible photographic imagery to form an idea of desired end of treatment result.
Stage two:Fabrication of stone study casts of current situation, and if necessary provision of a plastic bite guard to help relax facial muscles.
Stage three:Diagnostic wax-up. A full mock up of your potential new smile is assembled in wax in the laboratory for approval.
Stage four:Fitting the prototype smile. Preparation of all necessary teeth, usually over several visits and fitting of prototype plastic restorations to allow everyone to evaluate the cosmetics and function of the new smile. These prototypes can be worn for as long as necessary until everyone is happy with them.
Stage five:Replication of the prototypes into final crowns/veneers
Stage six:Provision of clear plastic night guard to be worn to protect the investment of your new smile.
