Solutions for Snoring

About Snoring

The main snoring cause is due to the partial closure of the airway during sleep. During sleep the muscles in the neck relax and for some people the soft tissue in the upper throat vibrates, which makes the sound we know as snoring.

What are the causes of snoring?

Snorers are often made to feel guilty, however the cause of snoring are often beyond their control. Certain factors increase the chances of being a snorer:

Physiology – The shape of the airway in some people makes snoring more likely.

Being Overweight – Excess body fat increases the chance of snoring.

Age – As we age weaker throat muscles increase snoring.

Lifestyle – Some people snore after drinking alcohol or taking sleeping tablets due to extra relaxation caused in the neck and throat.

Do men snore more than women?

Yes (55% vs 45% VAR international 2005)

Men carry excess body fat on the upper body resulting in higher levels of snoring. Also, in younger women hormones prevent the collapse of the airway during sleep.

In the long term diet and a change in lifestyle can have an affect on snoring.

What are the effects of snoring?

Snoring is more than just a loud noise. It leads to broken sleep for snorers and their partner. This can have a profound impact on their quality of life as it can be embarrassing and create marriage problems.

Research has shown that 60% of patients who snore have less sex and in 80% of cases they sleep in separate rooms. In addition snoring has been associated with medical complications and if left untreated the potential for developing obstructive sleep apnoea.

YOUR SNORING COULD BE A SIGN OF A MORE SERIOUS MEDICAL CONDITION

Studies have shown that the lack of sleep caused by snoring has wide reaching effects such as:

  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Poor motivation
  • Higher stress levels
  • Lack of energy
  • Accidents related to driving whilst tired
  • Less effectiveness at work effecting remuneration and career progression
  • Higher stress levels due to fatigue
  • Reduced sex drive

Who should a snorer see?

Snoring is the UKs secret epidemic. Research has shown that 80% of the population would visit their GP, but for the country’s 12 million snorers the answer lies with a specially trained clinician. The NHS cannot treat simple snorers due to its limited budget. Doctors can, in reality only refer people to specialist sleep centres for treatment and 50% of hospitals do not even provide a sleep service. This can lead to long waiting lists for appointments and often the snoring cannot be treated.

The potential does exist however for people with simple snoring to undergo clinically proven treatment with a snoring clinic using Sleepwell™.

Proven Snoring Treatment

The four clinically proven snoring treatments are:

Mandibular Advancement Splints

Mandibular Advancement Splints are customised mouth pieces made for each patient to be worn at night time to treat snoring. The gold standard is Sleepwell™, the most clinically proven, tailor made to offer maximum comfort and retention and allows the patient to adjust for effectiveness.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)

CPAP is the gold standard for the sufferers of severe obstructive sleep apnoea. There are many types of CPAP equipment and a number of CPAP products. CPAP treatment is not recommended for the treatment of simple snoring.

Losing Weight

Losing Weight can reduce or stop snoring and there are numerous other health benefits but it is a gradual process.

Snoring Surgery

There are a number of snoring surgery options but they are not always successful and can be extremely painful. This is recommended as the last option to stop snoring.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is Sleepwell™ comfortable to wear at night?

Yes. Sleepwell™ is laboratory manufactured, custom made to your mouth and made with a soft inner lining specifically adapted to your teeth. It allows full adjustability and side to side movement during sleep. High levels of patient comfort meant that during clinical trials over 98% of patients found the device acceptable.

Can I get Sleepwell™ on the NHS?

No. There is no provision within the NHS for this form of treatment due to limited resources.

Will my teeth accept Sleepwell™?

It is important to visit a trained healthcare professional for a full examination of your teeth. Most people are highly suitable however confirmation can only be obtained from your dentist.

If I loose my Sleepwell™ can I get another?

The unique nature of this appliance necessitates precise recordings of the teeth and therefore requires complete replacement. However if only one of two pieces are lost, each can be independently made at an appropriate cost but minimal patient inconvenience.

Is Sleepwell™ a permanent cure?

There is currently no permanent cure for snoring, only on-going treatment. The particular benefit of Sleepwell™ is that it is adjustable, which in turn offers greater longevity of treatment.

Will Sleepwell™ affect my sex life?

We believe it will improve your sex life! You and your partner should sleep better giving you higher energy levels and increased sex drive.

How long will it take to get used to Sleepwell™ and are there any side effects?

It may take 30 minutes longer to get to sleep on the first few nights as it does when one changes from sleeping with one rather than two pillows. For the first couple of nights some patients have higher salivation or drier mouths. It should take no longer than 2 days to get used to wearing Sleepwell™.
